What would you be willing to do to see an enormous sum of money in your bank account? That’s the unsettling question at the heart of Squid Game, the South Korean series that took social media by storm when it premiered in September 2021.

The story follows Seong Gi-hun, a man struggling with financial hardship who is approached by a mysterious recruiter offering him a chance at unimaginable wealth. But what first seems to be an innocent competition quickly spirals into a brutal, sadistic ordeal where the price of losing is far greater than just missing out on the prize.

The Return of Seong Gi-hun

If you’ve seen the first season on Netflix, you know that its ending left audiences with more questions than answers. The cliffhanger had fans eagerly awaiting a continuation, and in June 2022, Netflix officially confirmed that a second season was in the works.

Squid Game made history at the 2022 Emmy Awards, securing 20 nominations and multiple wins.

Lee Jung-jae, who plays Seong Gi-hun, won Best Leading Actor in a Drama Series, becoming the first non-English-language actor to achieve this honor.
Hwang Dong-hyuk won Best Director of a Drama Series, further cementing the show's global impact.
